I lived in Naperville, IL for about 7 years. It is located about 45 minutes away from the city (not including traffic). The taxes are a little higher than some of the surrounding areas, but it is a good area with nice houses and excellent schools. It also has many good shopping areas and grocery stores. Naperville was also named on a top 5 list (I'm not sure of the exact reference) of the safest places to live in America.
2 :
Oak Park is not too far from the City, it's probably take you about 15-20 minutes to get into downtown area by car, maybe even the same amount of time by train (Metra). Elmhurst is also pretty close also. Both towns are pretty nice to live in.

actually the northwest side of Chicago is a very nice area of the city to live in. not ghetto at all, close to the blueline and metra trains. plenty of shopping areas.

Naperville, a suburb about 35 miles away from Chicago is probably your best bet. It was recently featured in money magazine as the 2nd best place in the United States to raise a family. There are homes in the price range from 200,000 (mind you they are going to be small and old) to around 3,000,000. You can get a typical middle class home for about 400,000. The taxes are higher, but they are not going into the mayor's pocket. There are 2 excellent school districts, district 203 and district 204. 203 is older and extremely reputed, having extremely high standardized test score averages. 204 is a newer districts, so you will be looking at higher taxes. There is an excellent library, in fact it is number one for towns between 100,000 and 400,000. Naperville has about 140,000 people. The downtown area is posh yet friendly. The crime rate is really really low.

joliet, naperville, orland park are all on the south or west burbs and are nice. schamburg is another nice place to live.

About how much does temp work pay in Chicago

How much does temp work pay in Chicago?
I'm moving from NY to Chicago June 1, and I'm expecting to have to do temp work for a while to have some extra cash until I find a good job. Does anyone know how much temp work pays on average in Chicago?

It all depends on what you are qualified for. I am not in Chicago but I deal with a lot of temp services at my job here and they charge me about 50% more then what they would pay you. For example for an admin job (like filing, answering phones, general office stuff) I might pay like 15-18/ hour and they would get around 10-12. This is in the Philly area though
2 :
Five years ago I worked at the University of Chicago and I would hire temps for various offices when someone went on vacation or sick leave, etc. At that time a temp was paid anywhere from $12 - $15 per hour depending on what company I used. So I am sure the hourly pay is a little more now, five years later. Good Luck to you on your move and in finding a good job. ps - The University of Chicago pays very well and has very good benefits if you are moving closer to the South Side.
3 :
Brain surgery: $5,000.00 an hour. Fry line at McDonald's: $6.75 an hour. Being able to get the first job, when all you have are the skills for the second: Priceless!
4 :
This does depend on the job. Some temp jobs pay more than others.

About wage certification for subcontracted Chicago School work

Wage certification for subcontracted Chicago School work?
A company hired our company (valve manfacturer) to repair our specialty valve on a Chicago Public School (CPS) swimming pool. The company that hired us said CPS requires wage certification for the work, and provided an incomplete example, but no details. I cannot find anything mentioning this in info about contractors/subcontractors on CPS website. So I don't know exactly what they need or why. Does anyone know wage certification requirements for CPS contract work, or a link to details?

Here is a website about work and certifications in the State of Illinois http://lmi.ides.state.il.us/PDFs/wcig_08.pdf I think this is the phone number you would call with prevailing wage information 1-866-ONE-SRCE I am not sure from your question if you talking about prevailing wage but the website above has information and phone numbers that you can call to get help with the certification.
